Riverhead lost a heartbreaker to Huntington yesterday in a game they never trailed in until the fourth quarter, when a lapse in defensive play resulted in Huntington scoring two quick goals.

Riverhead took a 3-2 lead into half-time, and held onto it into the third quarter when they built the lead to 5-3. But the third quarter seemed to spell disaster for Riverhead, as Huntington tied the score at 5.

The fourth quarter was no easier with Huntington taking a 7-5 lead then adding another goal to make it 8-5. Riverhead, with about 1:15 remaining in the game, won two key face-offs, thanks to John Ehlers, who once again was superb at the X, leading to two goals in about 30 seconds. With the score now 8-7, Riverhead tried everything they could to get the ball into the Huntington zone, but to no avail. The last few seconds ticked away, and Huntington held on for the 8-7 win.

Playoff brackets will be announced today, Friday, May 12.
