Riverhead’s girls lacrosse season ended on a rainy windswept field in Smithtown yesterday, where the Blue Waves fell to No. 2 seed Smithtown East, 14-9.

The Bulls, who compiled a 14-2 record in regular-season play, dominated the first half with slick passing and shots down low as they had drove the score to 6-1. No. 7 seed Riverhead mounted a slight comeback to make it a respectable 8-4 at the half.

The East team thought it was a runaway game until the Blue Waves, capitalizing on errant Bulls’ passes and sloppy play, made it 10-7 midway through the second half. Smithtown, sensing a hungry Riverhead squad, buckled down and added four more goals to Riverhead’s two. But Smithtown East was nervous and played out the clock against an upstart Riverhead squad.
