The Jamesport Meeting House will host story night on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. in the now air-conditioned lecture room.
“We invite old-timers, new-timers and in-between-timers to tell stories about their community – as well as everyone who would like to just come and listen,” the meeting house said in a press release. A $5 donation is suggested. Light refreshments will be served.
“Everyone has a story. Come shares yours with your friends and neighbors. Everyone is welcome. No age restrictions,” the release said.
The Jamesport Meeting House, a structure built as a church in 1731 by Puritan settlers, was purchased in 2008 by a preservation trust formed by a group of concerned residents in and around Jamesport. They feared that the then vacant building would either be torn down or turned into a commercial venture and arranged the financing to buy it.
Now operating as a not-for-profit entity, the Jamesport Meeting House has evolved into a vital center for a broad range of events, including community meetings, lectures, Broadway performances and concerts of all kinds.
It is the oldest public building on the East End of Long Island and sits in heart of the Jamesport Historic District at 1590 Main Road. The Jamesport Meeting House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
