The Riverhead Blue Waves fell to 2-2 after a tough loss on the road to Half Hollow Hills East (4-0) yesterday 33-12.
The Blue Waves struggled all afternoon to find consistency in their offense. Dropped passes and some key stops by the Hills East defense led to over half of Riverhead’s possessions being four and out. On the defensive side, the Waves were constantly stung by big plays by Hills East. Two long runs, one of over 50 yards, in Hills East’s first two possessions led to a field goal and a touchdown, putting the Waves on their heels and down by 9 in the first quarter.
In the second half, the Waves gave the visiting crowd some hope as they put together a long 12-play drive capped off by touchdown on fourth and goal inside the one yard line. On the Hills East’s ensuing possession, a big hit on the quarterback dislodged the ball which was recovered by Riverhead. Four plays later, the Waves scored and cut the lead to 21-12.
Unfortunately, Hills East was able to turn it around and closed out the quarter with two more scores leading to the final score, 33 – 12.
The Waves return home to face Newfield (0-4) on Saturday, Oct. 7 (1:30 p.m. kickoff).
