Riverhead was defeated by Newfield 33-12 at Coach Mike McKillop Memorial Field today.
What started out as a feel-good game for the Blue Waves, quickly turned into a nightmare as Newfield passed and ran at will against a sluggish Riverhead defense.
Riverhead came close to scoring in the first quarter, but the tide changed as the offense could not move the ball against a swarming Newfield defense. Riverhead turned the ball over numerous times on interceptions and bad penalties. By the end of the first half, Newfield had jumped out to a 20-0 lead.
Riverhead seemed rejuvenated to start the second half, scoring to make it 20-6 on a Derrick Parker 3-yard touchdown run. A short time later, Christian Pace ran in a 5-yard TD to make it 20-12, and the Blue Waves were fired up.
But that was short-lived, as Newfield kick-started their offense, and added 13 more points to the board against a porous Riverhead defense. Newfield celebrated their first win in five games.
Riverhead celebrates its homecoming game next Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1:30 p.m. following the big homecoming parade through town. The Blue Waves take on Copiague.
