ShopRite is planning to open a new store in the former Waldbaum’s location on Route 58 in Riverhead.
A large banner recently appeared in the window of the empty storefront, announcing ShopRite’s arrival in the Riverhead Centre shopping complex.
Waldbaum’s closed its doors in the same location in October 2015, followed by the closure of King Kullen further east on Route 58 a month later. Waldbaum’s had operated in the Riverhead Centre storefront since 2003 and before that in the current Staple’s office products location since the late 1980s.
ShopRite is operated by Wakefern Food Company, a New Jersey-based retailer-owned cooperative that is comprised of more than 50 ShopRite supermarkets across the northeast.
There are currently 13 other ShopRite locations on Long Island, with its easternmost store located on Sunrise Highway in Patchogue.
A company spokesperson has not replied to requests for comment at this time. Check back for information about an opening date and other store features.
