An electrified Mercy squad hit the court with a vengeance in a showdown with Mattituck in Riverhead. Both teams went into last night’s game undefeated in League VII.

The Monarchs were on fire, dominating play on both ends of the court, hitting 3 three-pointers at will and after the first four minutes of play, were leading 7-0. Mattituck roared back and tied the game at 10. It was back and forth through the first half, which ended with Mattituck leading 23-19.

The second half was more of the same. Mattituck settled down and took a 35-32 lead into the fourth quarter, but with about 2:45 left on the clock, Mercy tied the score at 35 with a three-point shot from Sarah Penny. Mercy got into late foul trouble, giving Mattituck’s Mackenzie Daly the opportunity to sink some free throws to barely put away the game. Final score: Mattituck 40, Mercy 36.

Mattituck’s Liz Dwyer had 19 points while Gianna Santacroce had 15 points, and her sister Melina Santacroce had 11 Points.

Mercy, 6-5 overall, 4-1 in League VII, is scheduled to host Center Moriches (1-8, 1-4 in conference) tomorrow night at 6:15 p.m.

Mattituck (8-2 overall, 5-0 in League VII) will host Pierson/Bridgehampton (7-3,4-1) on Monday at 5:45 p.m.
