The Riverhead Blue Waves were all charged up as they came to play last ngiht, and thoroughly showed Northport they were not to be taken lightly.
The first half was a back and forth battle between two quick and very physical squads. Riverhead was solid on all counts, and took a 45-33 lead into the locker room at the end of the first half. Riverhead’s intensity ramped up twofold in the second half. They proceeded to take apart Northport, crashing the boards, grabbing key rebounds under the hoop, and making their all-important free throws when fouled.
This was possibly the best game of the season so far for the Waves and they showed they can play on a higher level than one of the top teams in the division. It was a stellar team effort, as Riverhead never looked back, and took home an 88-77 victory over Northport (14-4 overall, 7-3 in League 2).
Riverhead improved to 9-8 overall and 4-5 in League 2.
Cristian Pace had a game-high 28 points, followed by Cir’rus Davender with 25 and Quashiem Miller with 18.
The Waves travel to league-leading Central Islip (14-3, overall, 8 – 1 in League 2) tomorrow afternoon. Game time: 4:30 p.m.
