Ticks have become an increasing health hazard, particularly here on the East End of Long Island. Learning how to avoid being bitten by ticks has become ever more important as we learn about new tick-borne illnesses and new tick varieties appearing in our area.
Tick Wise Education president, April Nill-Boitano and East End Tick & Mosquito president Brian Kelly are hosting an art hike for tick awareness at Indian Island Park on Sunday, June 24 from 1 to 4 p.m. It’s a free family-friendly event that will showcase tick bite prevention strategies, as well as tick check and removal tips from local experts.
The “art-part” of the hike will be the display of winning posters of a contest hosted by Tick Wise Education and Legislator Bridget Fleming. Winners of the 2018 Tick Bite Safety Awareness contest will be displayed throughout the park.
The afternoon will feature a hike through Indian Island Park with winning posters, and honorable mentions, displayed in kiosks along the 30-minute trail. Local experts will share tick bite prevention strategies at the start of the trail, and tick check and removal tips at the end.
A rain date is set for Sunday, July 22 from 1 to 4 p.m.
