(Updated 2 p.m.) A male pedestrian was seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident this morning near the entrance of John Wesley Village in Riverhead.

The man, 59, sustained head and leg injuries and was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is listed in serious condition, according to Riverhead Police.

Police said they determined the pedestrian entered the westbound lane of Middle Road into the path of a westbound 2005 Ford Focus. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, police said. The vehicle was later impounded for Safety Checks.

A N.Y. State Police accident reconstruction team is responding to investigate the scene of the crash, which occurred at about 7:19 a.m.

Middle Road was closed to traffic between Roanoke and Ostrander avenues for the duration of the investigation.
