Raymour & Flanigan has purchased the former Toys ‘R’ Us site at at 1151 Old Country Road in Riverhead.
The furniture retailer took title to the property through a limited liability company, paying more than $4.68 million for the 3.8-acre site , according to Suffolk County land records.
Raymour & Flanigan, headquartered in Liverpool, New York, is ranked 10th among furniture retailers in the United States, according to Furniture Today. The family-owned company has 129 stores in New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Delaware, plus 19 customer service and distribution facilities, according to the company website.
The Old Country road site was the home of Bittersweet Greenhouses & Florists, which sold the property in 1990. Butcher shop owner George Gamaldi bought the property in 1991 and built the current structure, where he operated a specialty supermarket, Gamaldi’s Meat Way. The store closed after just a few years. The site was sold to Toys R Us in 1995.
Toys ‘R’ Us went into bankruptcy in September 2017, closed its stores and liquidated its assets. The Riverhead store closed in April 2018.
Raymour & Flanigan has purchased, or acquired the leases of, several former Toys ‘R’ Us locations in the Northeast.
Raymour & Flanigan will join several other major retailers located along the Route 58 corridor, including Ashley Furniture, Bob’s Discount furniture and Home Sense.
