(Update: Dec. 16, 5:15 a.m.) Riverhead Police have identified the man killed in Wednesday’s crash at the intersection of Horton and Reeves avenues as 85-year-old Patrick Welby of Calverton. His passenger, Nora Raughan, 86, also of Calverton sustained injuries police described as non-life-threatening. See story.

Original story (Dec. 15, 4:02 p.m.):

One person was killed and another injured in a motor vehicle crash this afternoon at the intersection of Horton and Reeves avenues in Riverhead.

The crash between a westbound sedan on Reeves Avenue and a dump truck northbound on Horton Avenue occurred shortly after 3 p.m.

The driver of the sedan was killed and his passenger was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by a Suffolk County Police helicopter. The driver of the dump truck was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Reeves Avenue is closed to traffic between Roanoke and Osborn avenues and Horton Avenue is closed between Middle Road and Sound Avenue. The roads will remain closed to through-traffic while the accident is investigated.
