Voters approved Riverhead Free Library’s 2024-2025 budget yesterday, Library Director Kerrie McMullen-Smith announced last night.

The vote was 236 in favor and 105 against,  the director said.

The approved $5.2 million operating budget will allow the library to increase its digital resources and undertake capital improvements in the next year, including the replacement of the building’s HVAC system. The library has also obtained a $275,000 state grant to cover the capital improvement expense.

Mary Byrne McDonell, Mitchell Hagler and Susan Bergmann were elected to three-year terms as library trustees.

McDonnell received 153 votes, Hagler 134 votes and Bergmann 123 votes. A fourth candidate, Jo Anna Polistena, received 86 votes.

The trustee position is an unpaid, volunteer post. The board of trustees oversees the library’s finances and sets policies governing its operations.

Voters also approved the 2024-2025 budget for Baiting Hollow Free Library by a vote of 232-105, McMullen-Smith said.
