A pedestrian attempting to cross Route 58 late last night was struck and killed by an eastbound vehicle, Riverhead Police said in a press release this morning.
Police said Jaime Martin Santos, 58, of Riverhead, was crossing the four-lane roadway just east of Northville Turnpike at about 11:40 p.m. when he was struck by an eastbound taxi cab that had just passed through the intersection of Route 58 and Northville Turnpike, police said.
Santos was attempting to cross from the north side to the south side of the road at the time of the accident, police said. He was treated at the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
The taxi, a 2015 Nissan Sentra owned by Riverhead Town Taxi, was operated by Manuel Efrain Guazhambo-Inga, 49, of Riverhead, according to the report. The operator was uninjured. A rear-seat passenger, identified by police as Tawwana Brown of Riverhead, 49, was also treated at the scene by RVAC and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said.
Riverhead Police detectives and a State Police Forensic Investigation Unit responded to the scene to investigate the accident, resulting in road closure for several hours, according to the press release.
No charges have been filed in connection with the accident and the investigation is still ongoing, police said.
