Riverhead Police are investigating the death of a man in a “tent encampment” in the woods north of 1333 East Main Street.
Police said they responded to the report of an unconscious and unresponsive man at that location today at 10:18 a.m.
Riverhead Police patrol officers and Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps determined that the man was deceased by unknown means, according to a press release issued this afternoon. Police said the deceased was a Hispanic male, age 59.
Riverhead Police detectives and the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office were notified and responded to assist with the investigation, according to the press release.
The death does not appear to be suspicious, police said, but the investigation remains ongoing.
The name of the deceased man is being withheld pending the notification of family, police said.
Anyone with information in reference to this investigation is asked to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.
