Mortimer M. Kelly III of Southold died on March 6, 2025, at home. He was 81 years old.
Mortimer was born in February 1944 in Seattle, Washington, to Alice M. (née Foscato) and Mortimer M. Kelly Jr. He graduated from Archbishop Molloy High School and went on to attend the University of Notre Dame, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for two years, achieving the rank of lieutenant. On Nov. 22, 1969, he married Kathleen P. (née Kilcommons) Kelly. They had three children and settled in Southold. Mortimer worked as an investment banker for Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. in New York City. He was a member of the Southold American Legion Griswold-Terry-Glover Post 803 and Saint Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold.
He was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen, and his sister, Alice Marie. He is survived by his children, Tara, Sean, and Kris, and his grandchild, Julian.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where American Legion services will be held at 4:30 p.m. The liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 11, at 11 a.m. at Saint Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold. Interment, with U.S. Army honors, will follow at Calverton National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
