A head-on collision on Middle Country Road in Wading River yesterday afternoon claimed the life of an 82-year-old woman, Riverhead Police said in a press release late last night.
An eastbound 2015 Chevrolet struck a westbound 2010 Toyota at approximately 2:39 p.m. near Kay Road, police said.
The Wading River Fire Department assisted in the extrication of both drivers and transported each to area hospitals.
Kathleen M. Cregg, 82, of Hampton Bays, the operator and sole occupant of the Chevrolet, was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where she succumbed to her injuries, according to the report.
Marco Vasquez, 63, of Ridge, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said.
The Riverhead Police Department Detective Division responded to the scene to conduct an investigation with the assistance of the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Unit, resulting in a road closure for several hours.
