A 29-year-old Riverhead man was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital today with life-threatening injuries sustained in a crash on Route 58 this morning, Riverhead Police said in a press release.
Police said Jorge Pagan was operating an electric scooter when he attempted to cross Route 58 at the intersection of Ostrander Avenue at approximately 9:54 a.m., when he was struck by a westbound 2018 Toyota RAV4 operated by Otari Kobiashvili, 24 of Westhampton Beach.
Responding officers found Pagan lying in the roadway with multiple injuries, according to the police report. He was treated at the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance and then airlifted to Stony Brook by a Suffolk County Police medevac helicopter.
Police said Kobiashvili passed a red signal and struck Pagan in one of the westbound lanes as Pagan attempted to cross the road from north to south.
Kobiashivili remained on scene and was cited for passing a red signal in relation to the incident, police said.
Route 58 was closed to traffic between Roanoke and Ostrander avenues for two and a half hours following the crash while police conducted an investigation of the accident.
Police ask anyone that may have witnessed the accident to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500 Ext 312.
