Walking with a purpose: Supporters of the North Fork Breast Health Coalition take part in a fundraising 5k at Tanger in Riverhead Sept. 28, 2025. RiverheadLOCAL/Emil Breitenbach Jr.

The North Fork Breast Health Coalition held its 27th annual 5K walk to raise awareness for breast cancer on Sunday at Tanger in Riverhead.

“One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime,”  North Fork Breast Health Coalition Melanie McEvoy said during opening ceremonies for the walk. “So chances are you, or someone you know, is affected. And we are all here for you.”

Hundreds of people turned out to walk and raise funds to support the NFBHC’s mission to help identify the causes of breast cancer and educate women about the importance of annual exams.

County Executive Ed Romaine and Riverhead Town Council Member Ken Rothwell were on hand to support the cause.

“This will come to an end because of your work here today,” Romaine said. “You are making a determined effort to make sure breast cancer, hopefully, becomes a thing of the past.”
