A man died Wednesday evening after crashing an electric bicycle into a chain-link fence in the rear parking lot of a shopping center on Route 58 in Riverhead, according to the Riverhead Police Department.

Police said officers responded at about 5:39 p.m. Aug. 5 to Ross Dress for Less, 1080 Old Country Road, for a report of a male lying in the parking lot. When officers arrived, they found an adult male unconscious and in traumatic arrest in the rear parking lot, police said.

An investigation determined the man had been operating an electric bicycle and collided with a chain-link fence along the western tree line, police said. The man was not wearing a safety helmet, according to police.

The man was identified as John Sanmartino, 54, undomiciled, police said. He was transported by Riverhead Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said. The Riverhead Detective Division responded to continue the investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information is asked to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500. Police said calls will be kept confidential.

Police also reminded residents that tips about suspicious or criminal activity can be reported to the department’s Crime Hotline at 631-727-3333. Calls will be kept confidential, police said.
