A frost advisory is in effect for eastern Suffolk County from midnight tonight through 9 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.
The advisory covers northeast Suffolk and southeast Suffolk, where temperatures as low as 35 degrees are expected and could lead to frost formation.
Frost can harm sensitive outdoor vegetation, and tender plants may be killed if left uncovered, the weather service said.
Forecasters said high pressure will be in control, bringing mainly clear skies and light winds — conditions that favor radiational cooling late tonight into early Sunday morning. The National Weather Service noted that similar temperatures to this morning are expected overnight, with frost likely along the Connecticut coast and across eastern Long Island.
In Riverhead, the forecast calls for areas of frost after 10 p.m. tonight, with a low around 32 degrees under mostly clear skies and light winds. Areas of frost are expected to linger into early Sunday morning before 8 a.m., followed by a sunny day with a high near 62 degrees.
Residents should take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold, including covering sensitive vegetation overnight.
