A frost advisory is in effect for Suffolk County from 10 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.
Overnight temperatures are expected to fall as low as 32 degrees, which could lead to frost formation, the weather service said. Typically colder locations — including the Pine Barrens — may see a few hours of subfreezing temperatures.
The advisory covers northwest, northeast, southwest and southeast Suffolk.
Frost can damage or kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if left uncovered, the weather service said. Residents should take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.
The frost threat comes as dry, seasonably chilly air remains in place under high pressure, with conditions favorable for radiational cooling overnight, according to the weather service’s forecast discussion.
In Riverhead, the forecast calls for widespread frost after midnight with mostly clear skies and a low around 34, with light north winds. Areas of frost are expected early Sunday, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 59. Temperatures are expected to moderate early next week, with highs climbing into the 60s.
