Deer hunting

Shotgun hunting for deer at the Enterprise Park at Calverton and at 1751 Sound Avenue in Calverton will be allowed from sunrise to sunset, Jan. 1 through Jan. 31.

The Town of Riverhead has started accepting applications for the upcoming season’s shotgun-hunting lottery, which will take place Dec. 7.

Riverhead Town will hold a lottery on Wednesday, Dec. 4 for permits to hunt for deer on town-owned land during the special shotgun season on Long Island in January.

The special shotgun season runs from Jan. 7 through 31, weekdays only — excluding Wednesdays — from sunrise to sunset.

The bike path and surrounding areas at the Calverton Enterprise Park have been closed by the town for the month of January due to deer-hunting season, which opened Jan. 4 and continues through Jan. 31, and this year includes weekends.

State deer hunting rules changed to allow bowhunting through Jan 31 in Suffolk and add weekends to deer special January firearms season.

The state DEC has designated 461 of the Wading River park's 772 acres for archery-only deer hunting this season, which runs through Dec. 31.
