Rep. Lee Zeldin has requested roughly $14 million in federal funds to assist the Riverhead Water District and the Suffolk County Water Authority to bring public water to homes near the former Grumman manufacturing facility in Calverton.

Local residents, environmental advocates and officials are “united” in their demand for the U.S. Navy to pay the cost of bringing public water to homes near the the former Grumman Aerospace manufacturing plant in Calverton. The Navy, however, is unimpressed.

The head of the Suffolk County Water Authority wrote to the Secretary of the Navy today offering to provide public water to the homes in Manorville and Calverton south of the former Grumman site, where toxic chemical contaminants have been detected in private residential wells.

Data released by the Navy this week for the first time show significant detections of toxic PFAS chemicals at the southern border of the former aerospace manufacturing site.

Sen. Chuck Schumer is urging the U.S. Navy to immediately develop a plan to connect homes near the former Grumman site in Calverton to public water and to expand its area of investigation for groundwater contamination near the site.

Sand stockpiled at the end of the eastern runway in Calverton was excavated by the sewer district from a distant site on the property that officials say was 'virgin territory.' The highway department plans to use it to sand local roads in winter weather.

“Every resident of the Manorville section of Riverhead worries every single time they turn on the tap." Kelly McClinchy of Manorville has organized residents in a campaign to get public water to their remote community.
