A wire mesh receptacle crafted in the form of a giant fish has been gobbling up recyclable cans and bottles at Riverhead Town's Iron Pier Beach in Northville, helping to keep the beach — and the Long Island Sound — clean.

Riverhead Town is looking to expand the pilot food scraps recycling program launched last year by the Environmental Advisory Committee.

Restrictions imposed by China and other Asian countries on imports of recovered materials have thrown recycling programs in U.S. communities into chaos.
