Riverhead students’ Regents exams will now count for 10% of their course grade average — down from 20% in previous years — under a new policy amendment adopted by the school board on Tuesday. 

Regents exam scores won't count toward a student's final course average again this year, the Riverhead school board voted last week. The board suspended the current policy that counts the exam score as 20% of the final grade.

Riverhead school faculty, parents and administrators are split on whether the Board of Education should change the policy that weighs a high school student's state Regents examination score as a fifth of their final course average.

"I don't think this is fair, to weight a three-hour exam the same as 10 weeks of instruction," school district Trustee Christopher Dorr said. Including the Regents exam score in a final course grade could lower the grade and hurt a student's chance for scholarships, he said. The district will form a committee to review the board policy,

January’s high school regents exams have been canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the New York State Department of Education announced yesterday.

NYSED will ask Board of Regents to eliminate Regents exams as a requirement for graduation this year & also cancel any Regents exam not required by the U.S. Department of Education.
