Riverhead firefighters knocked down a smoky vehicle fire in the parking lot outside Home Depot this afternoon.
Fire broke out inside a van parked outside the Route 58 home improvement store near the contractor’s entrance. Firefighters found a heavy smoke condition when they arrived on scene.
The driver of the van emerged from the store and told firefighters he had a propane tank in the back of the van, Riverhead Fire Chief Kevin Brooks said.
The cause of the fire was not known and the Riverhead fire marshal’s office was called to investigate.
