The East End DWI task force arrested four people on driving while intoxicated or ability impaired in Riverhead last night. In addition, one person was arrested on a felony drug possession charge and another for aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree.

The task force, consisting of officers from Riverhead Town Police, Southold Town Police, Suffolk County Police and New York State Police conducted sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols in Riverhead on New Year’s Eve.

Arrested were:

Donald Franco Hernandez, 41, of Flanders, charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fourth degree, a class C felony;
Kenneth Sarcona, 59, of East Quogue, charged with driving while intoxicated;
Alicia Hansen, 28, of Calverton, charged with driving while intoxicated;
Charles Cumella, 63, of Calverton, charged with driving while ability impaired;
Lenny Ancona, 52 of Centereach, charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs; and
Forrest Cowell, 26, of Riverhead, on a charge not specified by police in a press release issued this morning.

In a separate press release, Southampton police said task force officers stopped 72 vehicles and screened their operators for impairment. Three motorists and one passenger were arrested and a total of 15 summonses were issued, police said.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
