Riverhead firefighters put a quick stop to a fire at a West Main Street home Sunday.

The fire broke out in the basement of the two-story wood-frame home at 860 W. Main St., west of Raynor Avenue, according to radio reports. It was confined to the basement, though smoke filled the upper floors.

Police were first on the scene and said a number of people evacuated the home. Firefighters searched the dwelling for any additional occupants.

About 60 firefighters responded with eight pieces of apparatus.

“It was taking off when we first got here, but the guys made a good stop on it,” Chief Joe Raynor said. It was contained to the basement, Raynor said.

The fire was declared under control at 12:46 p.m.

West Main Street closed is closed to traffic in both directions between Raynor Avenue and Mill Road.

The Riverhead fire marshal is on scene and investigating. A rapid intervention team from Flanders Fire Department was called to the scene of the fire and Jamesport Fire Department stood by at Riverhead’s headquarters.

According to Riverhead Town 2014-2015 final assessment roll, the house is owned by Blake Realty LLC of 15 Deer Path, Port Jefferson.
