The light snow and very cold temperatures are making for icy road surfaces in some spots late this afternoon.
Icy conditions on Middle Road in Riverhead led to a single-car crash just west of Roanoke Avenue shortly before 3:30 this afternoon. One person sustained minor injuries when an SUV skidded off the roadway and into a utility pole.
Riverhead Highway Superintendent Gio Woodson said a brine truck was dispatched the surface of Middle Road in that area.
“People need to slow down and drive for the conditions of the road,” Woodson said.
The police department will be monitoring road conditions through the night to determine whether any other road surfaces require treatment or sanding.
Patrol officers are reporting icing conditions on additional roadways, including North Country Road in Wading River and on Roanoke Avenue north of Middle Road in Riverhead.
Temperatures will remain steady in the low 20s tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.
A wind chill advisory has been issued by the weather service for tomorrow night, when “dangerously cold air” will arrive in the area, according to the advisory. Wind chill readings will be as low as 15 below Wednesday night. “The frigid conditions will be dangerous to those venturing outside. Prolonged exposure may cause frostbite,” according to the advisory. It will be in effect from 7 p.m. tomorrow to 8 a.m. Thursday.
