Portions of Main Street in downtown Riverhead are closed to traffic his morning for snow clearing operations.

East Main Street is now closed between Roanoke and Ostrander avenues to allow Riverhead Highway Department crews to load snow from the gutter into trucks. The snow is carted off to a parking area on the north end of Stotzky Park in Riverhead, Highway Superintendent Gio Woodson said.

Woodson said he expects East Main Street to be reopened by about noon, maybe earlier.

“It’s going quicker than I thought,”  Woodson said. “If we get done earlier than expected, we’ll start in Polish Town later today.” Pulaski Street in Polish Town was scheduled for snow-clearing tomorrow, along with areas of Jamesport, the superintendent said.

Riverhead buildings and grounds crews assisted with clearing snow from the sidewalks and cleared the parking lots, Riverhead Supervisor Sean Walter said.

“Kudos to the highway department crews and buildings and grounds crews.  They did a great job with this storm,” he said.
