Riverhead was outgunned by Half Hollow Hills East 79-65 at Riverhead High School yesterday.

It was a good first half for the Blue Waves as they kept pace with a speedy Hills East team. They traded basket for basket and kept the score close.

But the second half was a different story as Riverhead came out sluggish and Hills East capitalized on Riverhead’s mistakes.

The second half also saw a different set of officials — though there were no personnel changes. They missed many flagrant fouls against Riverhead, one of which, a goaltending call, was seen by everyone in gym — except the two officials on the floor. That missed call resulted in a technical foul against Coach John Rossetti for jawing at the ref.

The Waves played catch-up the rest of the way. Riverhead (0-1 in League II, 1-5 overall) played well, but not good enough against a fast and skilled Hills East (1-0 in League II, 3-2 overall).

Riverhead’s next home game is Jan. 3  against the thus-far undefeated league leader, Bay Shore (4-0). Game time is 4:30 p.m.
