Fire gutted a Calverton home this afternoon.
The homeowner at 90 Alfred Avenue called 911 at 3:26 p.m. to report the fire, police said. Residents were safely evacuated.
There was heavy fire at the two-story home when firefighters arrived on scene. Riverhead Fire Department requested mutual aid from Wading River, Manorville and Ridge fire departments. Approximately 90 firefighters responded to the alarm.
The Suffolk County Arson Squad was called to investigate.
Correction: This story has been amended to reflect a correction to the identities of the area fire departments that provided mutual aid. Jamesport Fire Department was not called to the scene as originally reported.
