Riverhead Polish Independence Club hosted a special Flag Day steak night Wednesday at Polish Hall to honor two local Vietnam Veterans and raise money for Long Island veterans.
Sgt. Joseph Edler (U.S. Army)and Cmdr. Charles P. Zuhoski (U.S. Navy) were honored at the dinner, which drew 271 people.
Edler is the past commander of the Riverhead VFW post and remains an active member of the VFW, as well as the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.
Zuhoski was taken as a prisoner of war on July 31, 1967. After spending 2,054 days in captivity, Zuhoski was released during Operation Homecoming on March 14, 1973. He was briefly hospitalized at the Naval Hospital in St. Albins.
The event raised $12,000 for veterans, said Polish Hall’s Mike Osip. The organization teamed up with L.I. ABATE, which had three private donors who matched everything raised, Osip said.
Boy Scout Troop 94 from Wading River and the Riverhead High School NJROTC Honor Guard took part in the ceremonies.
