Riverhead residents and property owners are invited to participate in a lottery for bow-hunting permits on certain town-owned property.
The annual lottery will take place this year on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m. at Riverhead Town Hall.
Properties open to bow-hunting for deer include town-owned portions of the Calverton Enterprise Park, property at 1751 Sound Avenue, Calverton, property at Youngs Avenue, Riverhead, and Middle Road, Riverhead.
Bow-hunting for deer on these town properties will be allowed from Oct. 2 through Dec. 4.
The lottery is open to Town of Riverhead residents and real property owners only. All participants must show proper identification and a hunting license at the lottery.
Hunters must be in attendance in order to secure a hunting date and location.
The town began allowing bow-hunting for deer on town-owned properties in 2011, in the hope of culling the deer herd in the region. It is allowed by town permit during the state’s regular hunting season for deer (bow-hunting only), which this season runs from Oct.1 through Jan. 31.
In 2013, the town began opening town-owned properties to hunting during the special firearms season, which the state DEC has opened to lands in Suffolk County. The special firearms season runs from Jan. 1-31, 2018. For more information about deer hunting in Suffolk County,
Riverhead Town Hall is located at 200 Howell Avenue, Riverhead.
