For the second straight year, the Riverhead varsity cheerleading team made it to the finals in the Universal Cheerleaders Association National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Florida.
The Blue Waves scored high enough in the first round of competition in the Small Varsity Division I on Saturday to bypass the semifinals and advance directly to the finals round Sunday night, where they placed 14th.
“I could not be prouder of this amazing group of athletes,” cheerleading coach Stephanie Piraino wrote on Facebook. “We keep climbing the mountain. They are now ranked 14 in the nation. 68 teams in Division I and these ladies hit for a run through to finals and hit at finals. No one can ask any more than that.”
The coach said the team did “everything they set out to do” and “left all excuses at the door.”
“We are PROUD, we are STRONG, and we continue to be DRIVEN to succeed time and time again,” she wrote.
The team advanced to the finals again this year after placing first at a regional competition at Nassau County Community College in December.
