Riverhead lost to Mattituck/Southold 10-7 in a non-league game at Pulaski Sports Complex. Both teams looked to stay hot, well at least warm, on a chilly 35-degree first day of spring.
Riverhead came out of the gate first, scoring quickly to make it 1-0. Mattituck/Southold came to play, and quickly tied the score. Both teams’ defense tightened up and scoring was far and in between during the first half. Mattituck/Southold added two more goals to make it 3-1. But with about 90 seconds left in the half, Riverhead scored three goals to take a 4-3 lead going into halftime.
Mattituck/Southold broke it open in the second half, ramping up their passing and playmaking to score seven goals for a 10-4 lead. But Riverhead wasn’t ready to roll over and the Blue Waves stormed back and buried three more in the Mattituck/Southold goal before time ran out.
Riverhead’s next home game is Friday, April 6 at 3 p.m. against Smithtown West.
