Riverhead was defeated by Smithtown West 10-7 at the Pulaski Sports Complex.
It was another tough home game for Riverhead as they struggled against a solid Smithtown West defense. West broke the ice first, scoring 20 seconds into the game, but Riverhead answered right back to tie it at one — all within the first 54 seconds of the first quarter. After that, Riverhead found the West defense too tough to crack, as they clogged the zone, broke up passes, and forced Riverhead’s game to the outside.
On the other end, Smithtown had an easy time setting up plays down low, and seemingly scoring at will. With the score at 6-1, Coach Schandel pulled starting goalie Sofia Salgado, and inserted Leah Zenk. Zenk made some saves on a few Smithtown shots, which enabled her team to deposit two more goals into the Smithtown net, and by half time, it was 7-3 Smithtown West.
The second half had Riverhead trying to play catch-up with Smithtown, and at one point they managed to claw their way back to make it 8-6, but Smithtown West would put the game away for good, and at the final horn it was 10-7 Smithtown West over Riverhead.
Riverhead’s next home game is Monday, April 9, at 4 p.m. against Middle Country.
