Riverhead took its first shutout loss in the last game of the regular season, falling to Ward Melville 14-0 at the Pulaski sports complex yesterday.

This season the Riverhead faithful have been attending the boys lacrosse games with cow bells. They ring them for a goal, a face off win, or a good hit, but today the old expression “we need more cow bell” was spoken over and over during the course of this game.

Riverhead played the entire first quarter in their own zone (no cow bell), as Ward Melville showed why they are a perennial powerhouse.

The Waves didn’t get their first shot on goal until the second quarter (no cow bell), when the Patriots defense wasn’t swarming them. Riverhead was not able to set up plays and they did not have a flow to their game.

By the end of the first half, Ward Melville was leading 10-0.

In the second half, Riverhead started to pepper the Ward Melville goalie, but he stood his ground, blocking everything that came his way. Ward Melville tallied four more times, making it 14-0 (no cow bell), which held till the last seconds ticked off the clock.

Riverhead finishes the season 7-7 in league play, and 8-8 overall. Next game TBD as per playoff schedule.
