Deer hunting season is approaching and the Town of Riverhead has scheduled its annual lottery drawing for bow-hunting permits on certain town-owned properties.
The lottery will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at Riverhead Town Hall, 200 Howell Avenue.
The lottery is open to Riverhead Town residents and real property owners only. All participants must show proper identification and a NYS hunting license at the lottery.
Hunters must be in attendance in order to secure a hunting date and location.
Bow-hunting on Riverhead Town owned lands will run from Oct. 1 through Dec. 22.
Deer season in Suffolk County begins Oct. 1 and continues through Jan. 31, 2019. For information about permits to hunt on state-owned lands on Long Island visit the NYS DEC website.
The town began allowing bow-hunting for deer on town-owned properties in 2011, in the hope of culling the deer herd in the region.
The town-owned properties open to bow-hunting for deer this year are located at: the Enterprise Park at Calverton; 1751 Sound Avenue, Calverton; 437 Youngs Avenue, Riverhead; and Middle Road, Riverhead. The town board designated these properties and scheduled the bow-hunting season and lottery at its Sept. 6 meeting.
In 2013, the town began opening town-owned properties to hunting during the special firearms season, which the state DEC has opened to lands in Suffolk County. The special firearms season runs from Jan. 6-31, 2019. The Riverhead Town Board has not yet taken any action in relation to the 2019 special firearms season.
