A heat advisory is in effect today from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Temperatures in the mid-80s with a dew point of around 70 throughout the day will produce a heat index of around 95 today, according to the National Weather Service forecast.
A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time, the National Weather Service said.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency — call 911.
The UV index today is 9 on a scale of 1-11+. Values of 8 to 10 are classified as “very high” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
When the UV index is very high, protection against sun damage is needed, the EPA says. People who need to be outside during midday hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) should take steps to reduce sun exposure. The EPA recommends using a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and wearing a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses.
“Beachgoers should know that white sand and other bright surfaces reflect UV and can double UV exposure,” the EPA says.
