Heat advisory

Long Island faces dangerously hot and humid conditions from Wednesday afternoon through Friday evening, with heat index values expected to reach between 105 and 110, the National Weather Service said.

Air quality on Tuesday is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups due to ground-level ozone, according to the State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Riverhead Town will open its senior center at 60 Shade Tree Lane as a cooling center Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week due to forecast heat index values in the upper 90s to lower 100s.

A heat advisory for heat index values of 100º-102º F, and an air quality health advisory for ozone are in effect Friday. There is also a risk of severe weather in the late afternoon-evening Friday.

With afternoon temperatures forecast to reach 99 degrees locally Tuesday and heat index values as high as 104, the area remains under a heat advisory through 8 p.m. Tuesday. Most of L.I. west of Riverhead Town is under an excessive heat warning.

Heat index values are expected to reach 100 across the Long Island region, with more moderate temperatures on the South Fork. An air quality health advisory for ozone and a heat advisory are in effect through Tuesday evening.

High heat and humidity is in the forecast again today, prompting the continuation of a heat advisory in the local area for the third consecutive day. The heat advisory has been extended until 8 p.m. tonight.

A heat advisory continues today across much of Suffolk County, including Riverhead and the North Fork, where heat index values are expected to reach the upper-90s locally.
