The Alive on 25 summer street festival will take place in downtown Riverhead this evening, beginning at 5 p.m.

Tonight’s event features the debut of a special “Kids Zone” in Grangebel Park, where kid-friendly activities include “Bubblepalooza,” face-painting, stilt walkers, toys and balloons and booths featuring Riverhead Free Library, local Scouts, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Relic Sustainability and more.

An LED variety show will take place at 7:30 p.m. on the corner of Main Street and Peconic Avenue, featuring glowing props and different acts performed by Team Fun Circus.

That will be followed by family-focused outdoor movies sponsored by Main Street Agency from 8 to 9:30 p.m. in Grangebel Park.

“Increasing family-friendly offerings at Alive on 25 has been our focus since 2020 and we’ll finally get to introduce our ‘Kids Zone,’ bursting with bubbles and free activities during daylight then glittering at dusk with an LED circus performance,” Riverhead Business Improvement District Executive Director Kristy Verity said. “We’ll have something for everyone at Alive on 25.”

Verity said the July 15 return of Alive on 25 after a one-year absence due to last year’s COVID-19 shutdowns drew “the highest turnout in (the festival’s) history,” with a crowd she said numbered nearly 20,000 people, who turned out for the street festival, classic car show and fireworks display.

“You could feel the joy at our comeback event,” Verity said. “People were thrilled to be out and reconnecting. I have not seen smiles that big in a really long time,” Verity said.

Alive on 25 is a free, walkable, pop-up street festival offering local craft beverages, food trucks, dining, street vendors, and live music on six stages.

The festival takes place from 5 to 9:30 p.m. on Main Street, between Griffing Avenue and Union Avenue, and on Peconic Avenue, as well as in Grangebel Park.

Main Street from Union to Griffing and Peconic Avenue will be closed to traffic from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m.

There is one more Alive on 25 event scheduled this summer, coming up next Thursday (Aug. 19) coming up from 5 to 9:30 p.m. in the same location. It will also feature the “Kids Zone.”
