The Riverhead Town Anti-Litter Advisory committee has scheduled its spring cleanup event for Saturday, April 23 in honor of Earth Day.

Deborah Wetzel, chairperson of the anti-litter committee, said the spring cleanup last April saw over 200 volunteers who cleaned up more than 35 streets, parks and beaches within the town.

Volunteers can pick up gloves, pickers and bags at Riverhead Town Hall and register for a location they would like to clean up. Wetzel is asking that volunteers this year bring at least one garbage bag and their own disposable gloves to help the committee reduce costs. The cleanup runs from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.. Community service credits are available for volunteers.

The anti-litter committee is also looking for new members, Wetzel said.

The committee organizes cleanups and talks to businesses around the town about their responsibilities to clean up litter as outlined in the town code.

“We’ve gone to almost every business in town on [Route 58]. We started to go on West Main Street and East Main Street and talk to businesses about the code that requires them to keep their properties clean,” Wetzel said.

The committee is also talking to local schools to teach them about what they can do to reduce littering.

“Third and fourth graders, they’re really aware of this and they’re all bringing their reusable water bottles to school,” Wetzel said. “So hopefully, little by little, step by step, we will get to a point where people are not littering.”
