Updated- 2:29 p.m.: Police have identified the person who died in a single-car crash on Osborn Avenue early this morning as Derek J. Cruz, 27, of Riverhead.

Cruz, the driver and sole occupant of the car, crashed into a wooded area shortly after 5 a.m. on Osborn Avenue south of Mill Road. Riverhead Fire Department was called at 5:09 a.m. to extinguish a vehicle fire at that location. The fire was extinguished by police prior to the fire department’s arrival, police said in a press release this afternoon. Firefighters assisted with extracting the victim from the car, police said.

Cruz was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

The Riverhead Police Department Detective Division responded to investigate.

Anyone with any information in regards to the accident is asked to contact the Town of Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500.

Osborn Avenue was closed to traffic in both directions between the Middle Road traffic circle and Mill Road from the time of the crash until approximately 8:40 a.m.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated twice since its initial publication to add new information about the incident and to reflect the fact that there was only one person transported to the hospital, not two as first reported.
