As the coronavirus outbreak reached its peak in April, police activity in the Town of Riverhead plummeted, according to data released by the Riverhead Police Department last week. That followed a less dramatic but still significant drop in March, police data show.

It’s been five years since the town board last took up the issue of Riverhead’s inadequate justice court and police facilities. Since then, the situation at 210 Howell Avenue has only gotten worse, according to frustrated town justices, the police chief and staff who work there.
Riverhead Town and the Riverhead Police union representing rank and file officers have reached a five-year labor deal retroactive to Jan. 1, 2016. The agreement for the first time requires police officers to contribute to the cost of their health insurance coverage.
Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller swore in Sgt. Danielle Willsey, the second female sergeant in the department's history at the July 17 town board meeting. The chief also swore in a new patrol cop, Police Officer Matthew Suprina.
Riverhead Police detectives are seeking information about an overnight break-in at the Empire gas station convenience store on Route 58.
