Heavy rain is possible across the region today with additional rainfall of one to three inches expected.

Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations, the National Weather Service said in a statement. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas, the weather service said.

Rain is expected to continue throughout the day and night and into Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Motorists are advised to use extra care while traveling today, which is back-to-school day in Riverhead and most other locations across the region.
