A 23-year-old Middle Island man was struck and killed while crossing Route 58 just west of Osborn Avenue last night, Riverhead Town Police said in a press release this morning.
Police said Dean Arnum was crossing the road in front of the Apple Honda dealership when he was struck by a a 2013 Ford F 150 pickup truck operated by Jimmy Butts, 71, of Calverton.
Butts stayed at the scene, police said. The victim may also have been struck by another vehicle that left the scene, police said.
Arnum was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
No criminal charges were filed against Butts, police said.
The NY State Police Accident Reconstruction Team responded to assist in the investigation.
