Riverhead Town Police are seeking information about a motor vehicle accident in Jamesport this morning that seriously injured a sanitation worker riding on the back of a garbage truck.

Police said a garbage truck backed into a parked dump truck on Kirby Lane in Jamesport shortly before 10 o’clock this morning, causing a serious injury to the leg of the worker riding on a back step of the garbage truck.

The first police officer to respond to the scene immediately rendered first aid to the victim, whom police identified as Javier Palma-Guevara, age 25. Jamesport Fire Department and Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance responded to treat the victim, who was airlifted by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

The Riverhead Police Department detective division, Suffolk County Police Crime Scene Unit, the Suffolk Police Motor Carrier Unit and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) were also requested to the scene, according to a police press release issued this evening.

The driver of the garbage truck, Juan Valencia, 50, of Brentwood, stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.
