A Flanders man has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing physical injury, aggravated unlicensed operation and numerous traffic infractions following a head-on crash on County Road 104 near Route 105 last night, Southampton Police said in a press release this morning.

Police said Edin G. Vargas, 23, was the operator of a vehicle involved in a head-on collision last night at about 9:30 p.m. on County Road 104 in Flanders. Vargas removed the rear license plate from his vehicle before fleeing the scene without reporting the accident, police said.

Two occupants of the other vehicle involved in the crash were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said.

After a lengthy investigation, police located Vargas, who was uninjured, at his residence, according to the press release. He admitted to his role in the traffic accident and that he consciously left the scene of the accident without first reporting to anyone, police said.

Vargas was arrested and charged with Obstruction of Government Administration in the Second Degree, a misdemeanor, Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident that Caused Physical Injury, a misdemeanor, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the Second Degree, a misdemeanor, and numerous other traffic infractions, police said.

Vargas was transported to Southampton Town Police Headquarters where he was processed then released on a field appearance ticket with a future arraignment date.
